Design:
The reverse side, shown in the image, features an eagle spreading its wings over an American shield with 13 stars, with "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" around the periphery and the date (1909) at the bottom.
Material:
These pesos were struck in silver and served as backing for the Philippines' currency.
WWII Significance:
Millions of these pesos were dumped into Manila Bay in 1942 by the U.S. military to prevent them from falling into Japanese hands during World War II, and many have since been recovered.
