Larkin Soap Company's SAFEGUARD CARBOLIC TOILET SOAP wrapper. The Larkin Soap Company was founded in 1875 in Buffalo, New York as a small soap company. It grew in the 1800s and early 1900s and transformed into a mail order conglomerate that employed 2000 people with annual sales of $28.6 million in 1920. Founded as J. D. Larkin Manufacturer of Plain and Fancy soaps. Its first product was a yellow laundry bar called "sweet Home Soap." BY 1878 the company was producing 9 different soap products ranging from Boraxine soap powder to Jet harness soap. Carbolic is a mildly antiseptic soap dervied from coal tar or petroleum. It was first used by Joseph Lister in 1865 and is still distributed to disaster victims by the Red Cross.
