Tango no Sekku, or Boys’ Day, which originated back in the Kamakura period (1185 - 1333 AD) of Japan. This period is sometimes referred to as the "age of the samurai" because this is when the militaristic Kamakura shogunate seized control of Japan, leading to the emergence of the renowned samurai class.
In medieval times, samurai families would display their armor (yoroi; 鎧), helmets (kabuto; 兜), and katana swords (刀) as both a symbol of strength and as a protective ward against evil spirits in the days leading up to Boys’ Day.
This display case pulls from the top to display the samurai and then after the holiday is over is meant to have the glass case over it again.
Bought in Kyoto Japan from an antique shop so the Japanese written on it is old style writing. comes from smoke free pet home
*also, I see a small separation in the glass- I didn’t want to mess with it but I believe it’s due to shipping when I moved back to the states. Also the glass is dusty but the samurai is clean
