Following World War II, in 1948, plans began for the construction of the French Navy's high-speed escort ship E-50 class, with four vessels built between 1952 and 1954. The advanced version of this class was the Le Normand class E-52 high-speed escort ship, with 14 built and commissioned between 1956 and 1985. Displacing 1,250 tons, these ships were 1,500-ton vessels powered by two steam turbines of 20,000 horsepower each, capable of a maximum speed of 28 knots. They were armed with four 550mm triple-tube torpedo launchers, one 375mm Bofors Mle54, one six-tube anti-submarine rocket launcher, and two depth charge throwers.
