The game is a platforming adventure hybrid from the creative talent behind Donkey Kong Country. It features the characters Yooka, a green chameleon, and Laylee, a purple bat. The gameplay involves a series of challenging 2.5D levels and a separate 3D overworld where players can explore and solve puzzles. Players can also alter the state of the 2D levels by flipping switches in the 3D overworld, which can submerge, freeze, or otherwise change the environment to create new challenges. The game's main objective is to rescue the Royal Beettalion to help take on the villain, Capital B, in his "Impossible Lair"
