Set during WWII, the novel follows Dorothy Thom, a Spelman College graduate and librarian, and Leila Branch, a single mother. Both women enlist in the Women’s Army Corps (WAC), driven by a desire for adventure, purpose, and change. Despite coming from vastly different backgrounds, they form a deep friendship as they train and eventually join the 6888th Battalion.

Their mission? To sort through millions of backlogged letters and packages meant for American soldiers stationed in Europe. These women faced not only the logistical nightmare of organizing two years' worth of mail, but also the harsh realities of racism, sexism, and segregation—even within the military. Yet through grit, camaraderie, and determination, they became unsung heroes of the war effort.

The same women's battalion chronicled in this book also inspired the movie Six Triple Eight, a war story that was written and directed by the brilliant Tyler Perry. If you enjoyed the movie, you will likely enjoy this book.
