The Civil Wars, an Americana, folk, and country duo formed by guitarist John Paul White and vocalist Joy Williams, quickly garnered attention with the release of their digital album Live at Eddie’s Attic in 2009. Later that year, they followed up with the Poison & Wine EP, before partnering with producer Charlie Peacock to begin work on their debut full-length album in 2010. The result, Barton Hollow, was released in 2011 and went on to earn RIAA gold certification. It topped the digital charts and broke into Billboard’s Top 20 during its first week. The album also earned the duo two Grammy Awards in 2011 for Best Folk Album and Best Country Duo/Group Performance, solidifying The Civil Wars as immediate staples of the genres.
